Harry Potter Movie Opening Day! The another thing I love about moving into Los Angeles is the number of revival houses and single screen cinemas you can still check out. I'm not referring to your multiplexes which might be playing the latest Hollywood blockbusters, I'm referring to those historic concert halls that have fun playing the classic movies we loved watching whenever we were maturing. Many of these films we first watched on tv or rented them on VHS from my local video stores (back when they existed), but we never got a chance to see them for the big screen where they belonged. But due to places like New Beverly Cinema, the Egyptian Theatre and Grauman's Chinese among other movie theatres, we finally get to see them the way they were meant to be seen.
Now I know a number of people who today would prefer to curl up around the sofa and watch movies in your house, these cult movies should be seen on the big screen if you are ever in Los Angeles.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show"
This musical comedy horror cult classic which stars Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick plus the great Tim Curry as being a "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania" may be the longest-running midnight movie ever. Thirty-eight years after "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" arrived, it is still playing in limited release and midnight screenings keep occurring all over America. However, have not lived in anticipation of having seen this movie on the Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica where audience members can wear their cartoon characters and talk to the screen in ways they couldn't if the were another movie. Fans at the Nuart also get treated to a live performance from Sins O' The Flesh, a group of actors that perform combined with movie every Saturday night. You can always depend on having a most fantastic time if you watch this movie at the Nuart!
"The Room"
The 2003 romantic drama that was written, produced, directed and stars Tommy "YOU'RE TEARING ME APART LISA!" Wiseau may be called among the worst films available, along with the fans still can't get enough of it. "The Room" is constantly on the sell out midnight screenings with the Regent Theatre in Los Angeles, and you are able to always depend on Wiseau being there to accomplish a Q&A session while using fans. Audience members come dressed as their most favorite characters, one scene has them throwing plastic spoons in the screen, they will toss footballs together during the movie, plus they yell out insults regarding the undeniably low quality of the film. There are so many things wrong with "The Room," and yet it is so great to watch by having an audience.
"The Big Lebowski"
Joel and Ethan Coen followed up their masterpiece "Fargo" with this particular dark comedy starring Jeff Bridges as Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski. The movie would be a box office disappointment, but it has since garnered one of the biggest and strangest cult followings associated with a movie ever made as a result of the main character's unapologetically calm attitude. Screenings of "The Big Lebowski" is found at various Los Angeles movie theatres, but the real treat for fans is the place the Lebowski Fest relates to town. The recent Lebowski Fest held at the Saban Theater and Fountain Bowl featured a night of unlimited bowling as well as various trivia contests. There was even a performance by The Kyle Gass Band which featured a particular guest appearance by Jack Black as Evil Elvis. Oh yeah, they did show the movie there as well.
"Scott Pilgrim vs. The World"
What "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is always to the Nuart Theatre, "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" has quickly become to New Beverly Cinema. The still standing Los Angeles repertory revival house was the first one to show Edgar Wright's film following the end of its theatrical run, and possesses since taken on a permanent midnight residence alongside "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction." Wright, who's hosted several movie programs in the New Beverly, turns up at "Scott Pilgrim" screenings to reply to questions through the audience, and he has brought together with him several with the film's stars including Michael Cera. Recently, Mary Elizabeth Winstead who played Ramona, your ex of Scott Pilgrim's dreams, came with the New Beverly to introduce it towards the excited audience there. I make no apologies for naming "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" as my personal favorite movie of 2010.
"Big Trouble in Little China"
Every Los Angeles screening I have experienced of John Carpenter's fighting styles comedy has always triggered a sold out audience. Thanks to home video, "Big Trouble in Little China" gained a massive cult following, and audiences adore it today in such a way that you wished they did back when it first came out. It's this type of kick to look at this film with the audience since they are in hysterics over Kurt Russell delivering his dialogue with the unapologetic John Wayne swagger, and now we have long since accepted the fact his character of Jack Burton is a bit more of a blowhard than the usual hero. It doesn't matter how many times you have witnessed this movie; "Big Trouble in Little China" is still a blast to find out through.
