Apple's new 27-Inch Thunderbolt display is, generally, not only a new display. It is very similar as the older 27" LED Cinema Display, except it now includes Apple's Thunderbolt technology.
Still, that could not be a trival new feature. After all, the pr releases say Thunderbolt is the coolest connection ever invented, so perhaps this device is worth a closer inspection.
Apple's new Thunderbolt display may well not offer a lot with regards to new display panel technology, but that doesn't mean it is behind the days or lacking in quality. Besides simply being big, it provides everything that most users might actually want. LED backlighting provides for more precise lighting control, lower energy use, and much better black level reproduction. Meanwhile, IPS display technology enables vivid colors and wide viewing angles. And just to incorporate some extra sprinkes of awesome, the resolution is 2560x1440.
Though Apple has dropped the "Cinema Display" manufacturer from this awesome, it could still apply. This is a monitor that's geared towards the enjoyment of multimedia content like movies, photos as well as video games. The use of high-gloss glass as opposed to a matte surface is proof of that. It brings about more glare, but also drastically increases contrast. Images seem to have real "pop" , nor suffer from grainy details if viewed closely.

What's lacking is, of course, HDMI and DVI. The deficiency of USB 3.0 ports is a downer, though many competitors have not yet offer USB 3.0 also. The connections positioned on the Thunderbolt display makes sense if you are connecting it with a Mac, but when you aren't, it's going to seem rather limited.
The speakers on this display really are a 2.1 system which provides reasonably adequate sound. However, like all single built-in monitor sound system ever made, the not enough proper sound staging limits enjoyment. Many external speaker options under $100 can provide better sound quality, and you should want to purchase this type of solution until you almost never hear music, watch movies or play games. If you don't watch movies or play games though, you most likely wouldn't be buying this monitor.
To enable FaceTime, a microphone along with a webcam are included. The webcam quality is more preferable than most built-in monitor webcams and also many inexpensive stand-alone webcams. Microphone quality is adequate for FaceTime and web calls, but isn't a good choice for recording a podcast.
Although the display's large stand is stable and classy, it only tilts slightly, and there's no height, swivel or pivot adjustment. For some users, that is going to be a problem, and almost all other monitors priced above $400 offer these traits. This is one instance where Apple's resolve for simple design seriously limits an item.
There's no question that this Thunderbolt display, much like the previous 27" LED Cinema Display, comes with a top-notch viewing experience. Apple has not yet skimped on display technology, and even though the glossy glass panel might be annoying in bright rooms, it provides jaw-dropping visuals in additional ideal lighting.
It's a shame, then, that the display is average by another measure. Limited connectivity and a not enough ergnomic adjustments are major dings against any monitor priced above $400, nevermind one that's just a buck shy of $1000. If you wait for sale, you could potentially grab a 30-Inch Dell Ultrasharp for the same dough.
Given the indegent value, you can't really rate this device as anything better than average in spite of the excellent image quality. The main reason to get this display isn't because it's the best value but instead because you own a Mac already, and you desire to stay in Apple's ecosystem.
